Ear Treatment
Has your pet been pawing at their ears or shaking their head frequently? They could have an ear infection—one of the most common medical issues in pets, particularly dogs with drooping ears. Symptoms include ear scratching, head shaking, redness or pain when the ears are touched, foul odor, or dark discharge from the ear. Here are four essential facts about ear infections:
- Ear infections never resolve without treatment. Ignoring them can cause permanent damage, such as ear canal scarring and narrowing. These changes make pets prone to chronic infections and ongoing discomfort. Additional complications, such as aural hematomas (blood-filled swellings in the ear flap) or inner ear infections, may develop.
- Each ear infection is different. Otitis externa results from various causes: bacteria, yeast, or mites. Based on ear cytology findings, our doctors prescribe targeted medications containing specific ingredients—antibiotics (for bacteria), antifungals (for yeast), miticides (for ear mites), and anti-inflammatories for pain relief. Previous ear medications may not work for new infections due to different underlying causes.
- Proper ear cleaning is essential alongside medication. Our veterinarians frequently prescribe cleaning solutions to clear wax and discharge before applying medicine. Medication cannot reach infected tissue through debris-filled ear canals, making cleaning crucial for successful treatment.
- Follow-up appointments ensure complete healing. Your pet must return (typically 7-10 days later) for ear rechecks. Since medications contain anti-inflammatories that mask symptoms, ears may appear healed when the infection persists. Some infections need extended treatment, and only rechecks confirm complete resolution.
To prevent recurring infections, follow all treatment instructions carefully, schedule recheck visits, inspect your pet’s ears regularly, and clean weekly with veterinary-approved solutions. Chronic ear problems may require additional testing for underlying conditions like allergies, thyroid disease, or Cushing’s disease.
